The Skagway Historic Town Tour with Gold Panning begins in downtown Skagway on the corner of 2nd & Broadway in the heart of the Historic District. The district contains nearly 100 surviving Gold Rush-era buildings, many preserved with colorful false-fronts and wooden Boardwalks. While driving through town, your tour guide will point out buildings of interest and give brief histories of each location. As we leave town, we will head towards the Historic Gold Rush Cemetery. This is the oldest cemetery in Skagway. Many of Skagway’s famous Gold Rush characters are interred here including the notorious Jefferson “Soapy” Smith, Frank Reid & Martin Itjen next to his “world’s largest gold nugget!” Once we depart the cemetery, we will drive to the scenic Skagway Overlook, offering panoramic, bird’s-eye view of Skagway, the cruise ship port and the Lynn Canal fjord. Lastly, we will travel back to town with a stop at Skagway Mining Company where we will watch a 10 minute video about the Klondike Gold Rush before we try our hand at gold panning! You will have 20-30 minutes to find as much gold as you can and keep what you find!
